While exploring Nullsec, an Outpost Conversion Monument was discovered as a landmark object in space, visible on the overview but not listed as a beacon. Further research confirmed that this object was one of the permanent monuments created by CCP to preserve the locations of former conquerable stations and player-built outposts from New Eden’s pre-Citadel era.

Signal Cartel initiated a survey to locate and document all 95 known Station and Outpost Conversion Monuments across Nullsec. This page serves as the central record for that effort.

History

The First and Last Outposts

Outposts were introduced to New Eden on 29 June YC107 with the release of EVE Online: Exodus – Cold War. This expansion allowed capsuleers for the first time to construct permanent stations in Nullsec space, laying the foundation for player-driven infrastructure, sovereignty warfare, and large-scale economic development in remote regions.

The first capsuleer-built outpost was anchored by the alliance Ascendant Frontier in the system 5P-AIP (Feythabolis) on 20 August YC107, shortly after the Outpost mechanic was introduced to the game. This outpost was privately owned and served as a strategic base for its alliance in deep Nullsec.

The first publicly accessible outpost was ISS Marginis, anchored in the system KDF-GY (Catch) and opened on 26 October YC107. This outpost operated with open docking rights for all capsuleers and is often cited as the first “public” outpost in EVE Online history.

In the final months before the Outpost mechanic was deprecated, the alliance Fraternity. anchored what is widely regarded as the 1335th and last capsuleer-constructed outpost in the system S-E6ES (Catch). According to community reports, this outpost was completed under unusual logistical pressure and represented the last use of the classic outpost architecture before faction citadels replaced all outposts in YC120

Transition to Upwell & Faction Citadels

In YC120, CCP announced the replacement of all 1335 outposts and conquerable stations with faction-aligned Upwell structures. The Outpost Phase-Out Program detailed the deployment, logistics, and preparation for the Faction Citadel conversion. Each capsuleer-built outpost was converted into an empire-aligned faction Fortizar corresponding to its racial origin, while ownership and sovereignty structures were preserved through inheritance. In total, 68 conquerable stations and over 1,335 outposts were transformed during this process, and their former locations in space were commemorated with 95 permanent Station & Outpost Conversion Monuments.

This conversion marked the end of the outpost era and the culmination of Upwell’s long-term objective to standardize capsuleer infrastructure within the citadel ecosystem.

Unique Fortizars

Upwell also introduced five unique upgraded Fortizars as part of the outpost transition, with one design for each racial outpost type and one for the former conquerable stations. These special hulls were named in homage to capsuleers who played a role in the original deployment of their corresponding outposts:

1. ‘Draccous’ Manufacturing Fortizar
  • Replaces the Amarr Manufacturing Outpost.
  • Only 398 will ever exist.
  • Named for “Draccous Station”, the first ever Amarr Outpost in New Eden.
  • Draccous Station was built by the EVE Defense Force corp of the Ascendant Frontier alliance in 0OYZ-G.

2. ‘Horizon’ Research Fortizar
  • Replaces the Caldari Research Outpost.
  • Only 114 will ever exist.
  • Named for the Celestial Horizon corporation that built many of the first Outposts (including the first Minmatar and Caldari ones).
  • The first Caldari Outpost was “Prometheus Research Station” built by Celestial Horizon of ASCN in GHZ-SJ.

3. ‘Marginis’ Administrative Fortizar
  • Replaces the Gallente Administrative Outpost.
  • Only 188 will ever exist.
  • Named for “ISS Marginis”, the first Gallente Outpost in New Eden.
  • ISS Marginis was built by the Interstellar Starbase Syndicate in KDF-GY.
  • ISS Marginis was built from an IPO and was the first public freeport Outpost in EVE.

4. ‘Moreau’ Fortizar
  • Replaces all of New Eden’s Conquerable Stations.
  • Only 68 will ever exist.
  • Named for Sébastien Moreau, the NPC founder of the Immensea organization that built the Conquerable Stations.
  • Check out the “Forsaken Ruins” chronicle for the story.

5. ‘Prometheus’ Service Fortizar
  • Only 441 will ever exist.
  • Named for “Prometheus Station”, the first ever Outpost in New Eden.
  • Prometheus Station was deployed by Celestial Horizon corp and the Ascendant Frontier alliance in 5P-AIP.
  • It was named for Prometheus Wrong, the player who sponsored its construction.

Monuments in Nullsec

Before the monuments were finalized, CCP Fozzie created a thread on the official forums explaining that two alliances had requested special monument inscriptions to honor a deceased community member. CCP approved the request and extended the offer to others in the interest of fairness.

As part of the conversion, 95 Station & Outpost Conversion Monuments were deployed to Nullsec to preserve the history of capsuleer-built outposts and conquerable stations. Each monument marks the exact location of a former outpost and displays its final alliance ownership. A small number also preserve unique inscriptions that summarize major events or conflicts associated with the system.

Standard Monument Inscription

The majority (84) of Station and Outpost Conversion Monuments bear the following standard inscription:

This monument has been installed by the Upwell Consortium during their massive outpost and conquerable station conversion process of YC120. It honors the long and storied capsuleer history surrounding the station that once stood in this system. Once the final capsuleer owners of each stations have been confirmed in June of YC120 each of these monuments will be upgraded to proudly display the alliance logos of the final owners of the station and to list a short summary of this station's history.

Unique Monument Inscriptions

There are 11 unique inscriptions:

Project Scope

For over five years the alliance SOLAR FLEET maintained control of the outpost, until YC115 when they lost it to Red Alliance. This began a year of constant conflict, with the outpost being retaken by SOLAR FLEET only to be lost again to Pandemic Legion then finally taken by Legion of xXDEATHXx.

When it was decommissioned five years later skill urself alliance controlled the outpost.

On this site on the 24th of October YC107 construction was completed on the ISS Marginis, the first ever Gallente outpost.

Built by the Interstellar Starbase Syndicate, Marginis was also the first outpost to be constructed for the purpose of public access. People from all over New Eden invested in ISS's vision of a new capsuleer controlled hub, a "Yulai of the south", where all who came in peace could trade free from empire control.

ISS would eventually disband and the final owner of ISS Marginis was the alliance, Tactical Supremacy. When the outposts of New Eden were replaced by new faction citadels it was only fitting that Marginis give its name to the Gallente variant. With Marginis citadels now placed throughout the cluster, the legacy of this legendary station has been secured.

We mark this site so that all might remember that a single act can change the fate of thousands.

During the Second Great War, the KenZoku alliance defended the outpost that stood here against the Goonswarm. As the battle was ending a navigational error caused an Aeon mothership to warp to a stargate that it could not jump through. It was quickly surrounded by Goonswarm ships and the Aeon and its entire capital escort were destroyed.

The remaining Kenzoku pilots fled and were trapped in PR-8CA. Without their capital fleet the alliance was powerless, and by the summer of YC111 the region had fallen. The outpost at J-LPX7 passed through many hands throughout the years, but it would find itself under Goonswarm control again when it was decommissioned.

Monument inscription:

This monument marks the location of the first outpost ever to be built by the capsuleers of New Eden, Prometheus Station.

Activated on the 20th of August YC107 the outpost was constructed by the alliance Ascendant Frontier, despite being at war with the Mercenary Coalition at the time. It is named for Prometheus Wrong, the capsuleer who oversaw the project. It cost 26 billion ISK and it took three days just to move the required components to the site.

Fierce isolationists by nature, Ascendant Frontier briefly suspended their policy of killing any non-friendlies on sight so that neutral pilots could visit the new outpost. Over the years many Alliances controlled the historic location, but it was Test Alliance Please Ignore who held control when it was decommissioned in YC120. The outpost may now be gone, but this monument stands as a reminder of a time when the pilots of New Eden came together to take control of their future.

RED.Overlord maintained control of the outpost until a fatal fueling error left many of their towers throughout the system vulnerable. The Goonswarm quickly took advantage, attacking towers and then finally taking the outpost in a swift siege. RED.Overlord rallied, however, taking back the outpost in early YC111.

After a tumultuous beginning stability returned to the system and RED.Overlord maintained control of the historic station until YC114 when they withdrew from the area. After this it passed through many hands, eventually coming under the control of Fraternity before being decommissioned.

Monument inscription:

The outpost that once stood here was built by IT Alliance in YC112 and held by The Initiative when it was decommissioned, but it was most famous for the part it played in the Fountain War.

Test Alliance Please Ignore had taken control of the outpost in YC113 as part of their expansion throughout Fountain region. In June of YC115, the CFC coalition invaded Fountain and for months two of the biggest war machines in EVE fought for control of the region. Eventually, CFC fought their way to 6VDT-H, Test's traditional home in the region.

Every available pilot allied to either side flocked to the system. During the siege 4000 pilots were counted in the system, making it the biggest battle New Eden had witnessed at that time. Test fought valiantly but CFC's bombers were savagely effective. With falling numbers and all their escape routes blocked, the remaining Test ships made one final doomed charge into the heart of their enemy's capital fleet. All were destroyed.

Following the battle, Test announced they would be pulling out of Fountain. There would be many future conflicts between Test and CFC, but it was on this spot that the Fountain war ended.

Here near the edge of the Providence region, the Curatores Veritatis Alliance (CVA) constructed their first outpost.

It was in this system that CVA stood its ground against 160 Triumvirate ships. The Providence Holding Coalition, a group of alliances dedicated to stability in the region, came to CVA's aide and rallied 190 ships to protect the system. After a hard fought battle with heavy losses on both sides, the Triumvirate was pushed back. CVA said that the victory proved an "undiminished resolve to build a safe, prosperous and civilized Providence."

Eventually, the outpost would fall to Agony Empire in YC102. The final owners were Test Alliance Please Ignore, having conquered it in YC120. When it was time for the old outposts to be decommissioned, Test seeded this monument to CVA in acknowledgment of its significance not just to the Curatores Veritatis Alliance, but to the history of Providence.

Station placement

Although most Station & Outpost Conversion Monuments were positioned at, or near, the original coordinates of their corresponding outposts, a number of monuments are placed unusually close to nearby celestials. These irregular placements likely reflect the original anchoring positions of capsuleer-built outposts rather than standardized post-conversion safety offsets. As a result, a few monuments can now be observed embedded in orbital approach paths or appearing visually adjacent to planetary surfaces when viewed at close range.
